Sourcing 3D printing materials

Material is where the running cost of additive manufacturing actually lives. The machine is a one-off; powder, filament and resin are bought every month for as long as the machine runs — and the price spread between an OEM-branded material and an equivalent third-party grade can be several times over.

The catch is that not every machine will accept third-party material, and even where it will, the process parameters were developed for a specific powder. Sourcing well means being precise about the machine and the process, not just the polymer name — "PA12" covers grades with quite different refresh ratios, particle distributions and ageing behaviour.

Material families

Polymer powders

For SLS and MJF: PA12 and PA11 dominate, with glass-filled, aluminium-filled and flame-retardant variants, plus TPU for flexible parts. The key commercial questions are the refresh ratio the process needs and how much unsintered powder can be reused before properties drift.

Filaments and resins

Filaments run from commodity PLA and PETG up to engineering grades — ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PEEK and carbon-fibre reinforced compounds. Resins cover general purpose, tough, high-temperature, castable and biocompatible grades. Diameter tolerance and moisture control matter far more on industrial machines than on desktop ones.

Metal powders

  • Gas-atomised powders — spherical, good flowability; the standard for laser powder bed fusion.
  • Common alloys — Ti6Al4V, 316L, 17-4PH, AlSi10Mg, Inconel 718/625, maraging steel, CoCr.
  • Particle size distribution — typically 15–45 µm for LPBF, coarser for DED and binder jetting.
