A machine tool is bought against a part, not against a specification sheet. The useful enquiry starts with the work: the largest and most awkward component, the material, the tolerances that actually matter, the finish, and how many you need an hour. From that a supplier can tell you what class of machine you need, and whether the one you were about to buy would have done it.

  • Rigidity — expressed indirectly through machine mass, casting design and way type. Two machines with identical travels and very different weights are not the same machine.
  • Accuracy and repeatability — positioning and repeatability figures to a stated standard such as ISO 230, measured at a stated temperature. Ask which standard, because unqualified figures are marketing.
  • Tooling interface — spindle taper, tool changer capacity and maximum tool length and weight. If it does not match the tooling you already own, add the cost of a new tooling inventory to the quote.

New, used or rebuilt

A new machine brings warranty, current controls, spares availability and a service relationship. A good used machine brings capacity immediately at a large discount, and its risk is entirely in condition and history — hours, application, whether it was maintained, and whether the control generation is still supported.

A rebuild is the option most workshops overlook. Machine tool castings are effectively permanent; ways, screws, spindles and controls are not. A rebuild of a sound machine can deliver near-new accuracy for a fraction of the price with a known base, and it is the honest answer when the geometry is good and the electronics have aged out. Ask for the geometric report before and after, not just a description of the work.

The control is a ten-year commitment

Control choice outlives the machine purchase. Programmers, post-processors, operators and habits are all specific to a control family, and a workshop with three control brands trains three times and stocks three sets of spares. If you already run one, staying with it has value that rarely appears in a comparison.
