Sourcing a machine tool
A machine tool is bought against a part, not against a specification sheet. The useful enquiry starts with the work: the largest and most awkward component, the material, the tolerances that actually matter, the finish, and how many you need an hour. From that a supplier can tell you what class of machine you need, and whether the one you were about to buy would have done it.
Doing it the other way round — picking travels and a tool changer size, then finding parts for the machine — is how workshops end up with a machine that fits the part and cannot hold the tolerance, or one that holds the tolerance and takes twice the cycle time to do it.
The numbers that decide capability
- Work envelope — travels, table size and load, and the clearance actually available with a fixture and a long tool in the spindle. The usable envelope is always smaller than the catalogue one.
- Spindle power and torque — the curve matters more than the peak. A high-rpm spindle with little low-end torque is wrong for heavy steel cutting however impressive the maximum speed looks.
- Rigidity — expressed indirectly through machine mass, casting design and way type. Two machines with identical travels and very different weights are not the same machine.
- Accuracy and repeatability — positioning and repeatability figures to a stated standard such as ISO 230, measured at a stated temperature. Ask which standard, because unqualified figures are marketing.
- Tooling interface — spindle taper, tool changer capacity and maximum tool length and weight. If it does not match the tooling you already own, add the cost of a new tooling inventory to the quote.
New, used or rebuilt
A new machine brings warranty, current controls, spares availability and a service relationship. A good used machine brings capacity immediately at a large discount, and its risk is entirely in condition and history — hours, application, whether it was maintained, and whether the control generation is still supported.
A rebuild is the option most workshops overlook. Machine tool castings are effectively permanent; ways, screws, spindles and controls are not. A rebuild of a sound machine can deliver near-new accuracy for a fraction of the price with a known base, and it is the honest answer when the geometry is good and the electronics have aged out. Ask for the geometric report before and after, not just a description of the work.
The control is a ten-year commitment
Control choice outlives the machine purchase. Programmers, post-processors, operators and habits are all specific to a control family, and a workshop with three control brands trains three times and stocks three sets of spares. If you already run one, staying with it has value that rarely appears in a comparison.
The exception is support. Ask what happens when the control fails in year twelve: whether boards are still available, whether the local service partner holds them, and what a retrofit would cost. On used machines this question matters more than the price, because an unsupported control turns a working machine into a very heavy table.
Installation is part of the purchase
Ask early about foundation requirements, floor loading, power supply and phase, compressed air, extraction, coolant and chip handling, and crane or rigging access to get the machine into the building. A machine that cannot get through the door is a story every workshop has heard and some have lived.
Then agree the acceptance: a machine run-off at the builder or dealer before shipment, a geometric acceptance test on site, and ideally a test cut of one of your parts. Tie payment milestones to those, not to delivery alone.
What you are really buying is uptime
A machine tool earns money only while it is cutting, so the service relationship is part of the specification. Ask where the nearest engineer is based, what the guaranteed response time is, what spares are held locally, and what an out-of-warranty spindle rebuild costs. A cheaper machine from a dealer four hours away with no local stock is not cheaper.
Ask about training too, and be specific: operator, setter and programmer training are three different courses, and the cost of a machine standing idle because nobody can set it exceeds the price of the course within days.
