Where a rod will not fit or the stroke is long, rodless cylinders carry the load along the barrel and halve the installed length. Guided and twin-rod units take side loads a plain cylinder cannot and remove a separate linear guide. Rotary actuators, grippers and vacuum components come from the same suppliers and are worth quoting together, since handling stations rarely need only one of them.
Electric actuators are the honest alternative to mention: for positioning at several points, variable force, or where air is scarce, an electric axis costs more to buy and far less to run.
