A welding set is the cheapest part of a welding operation. Over the life of a machine, consumables, gas, electricity and above all the welder's time dwarf it, which is why buying on the price of the power source alone tends to produce a workshop full of machines nobody likes using.

So state your real arc-on time and the current you weld at, and check the duty cycle at *that* current rather than the headline figure, which is usually quoted at a lower one. This single number separates a machine that suits a maintenance workshop from one that suits a production line, and they are often the same price.
Choosing the process
- MIG/MAG — fast, easy to learn, and the workhorse for steel and stainless in fabrication. Deposition rate is why it dominates production.
- TIG — slow, clean and precise, for thin material, aluminium, stainless and anywhere the weld is visible or has to be leak-tight.
- MMA (stick) — tolerant of wind, rust and site conditions, which is why it survives on site work long after workshops moved on.
- Flux-cored — high deposition on thicker sections and outdoor work, with more fume and more cleanup.
- Spot and resistance — thin sheet at volume, minimal consumables, and a different machine and supplier population entirely.
Pulse and synergic control are worth asking about for aluminium and thin stainless: they widen the usable parameter window, which mostly means less rework from a less experienced welder. On plain steel fillet welds they matter far less than the salesperson may suggest.
Fume extraction is not optional
Welding fume is classified as carcinogenic to humans, and that reclassification changed the legal position across Europe: control at source is expected for essentially all welding, including mild steel, and general workshop ventilation is not accepted as sufficient. This is now an enforcement matter rather than a good-practice suggestion.
Treat extraction as part of the equipment purchase rather than a later addition. On-torch extraction, extraction arms and downdraft benches each suit different work, and the honest test is whether the welder will actually use it — a system that gets in the way is a system that gets switched off. Ask for a suggestion based on your bay layout, not a catalogue page.
The running cost is consumables and gas
Torches, liners, tips, nozzles and wire are the real spend, and the cheapest tips fail in a way that costs arc time rather than money. Ask what a torch's consumables cost per month at your usage, and whether the supplier stocks them locally — a machine whose parts arrive in three days is a machine that stops for three days.
Gas is worth a separate conversation. Cylinder rental adds up quietly, and above a certain consumption a bulk or bundle arrangement is substantially cheaper. Ask a supplier to work out where your usage sits against that crossover; it is one of the few savings available without changing anything about how you weld.
Buying with automation in mind
If robot welding is anywhere in the plan, say so now. Power sources intended for automation carry the communication interfaces a cell needs, and buying manual sets today can mean replacing them when the cell arrives. The incremental cost at purchase is far smaller than the replacement.
The same applies to positioners and manipulators. A turntable that lets a welder work downhand instead of overhead improves quality and speed immediately, and it is usually cheaper than the productivity it buys — ask for it to be quoted alongside the machine rather than instead of it.
