Sourcing abrasives

Abrasives are bought by unit price more consistently than almost anything else in a workshop, and it is almost always the wrong measure. A disc that costs twice as much and lasts four times as long is cheaper per part — and it also halves the number of times somebody stops, changes it, and starts again, which on a hand-finishing operation is the larger saving by a wide margin.

So the number worth asking for is cost per part or per hour of use, and any supplier who takes the category seriously will run a documented trial to establish it. Match the grain to the material

  • Aluminium oxide — the general-purpose grain for steel and general fabrication. Cheap, forgiving, and fine for most low-duty work.
  • Zirconia alumina — tougher and self-sharpening under pressure, made for heavy stock removal on steel and stainless. Needs real pressure to work as designed.
  • Ceramic — the highest-performance conventional grain: it fractures to keep a fresh edge, cuts fast and cool and lasts far longer, at a higher price that volume work repays.
  • Silicon carbide — hard and sharp, for cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stone and glass rather than steel.
  • CBN and diamond — superabrasives. CBN for hardened steels, diamond for carbide, ceramics and glass. Very expensive per wheel and often the cheapest option per part in production grinding.

The most common mistake is a general-purpose grain on stainless, where it glazes, generates heat and burns the surface. The second is running a ceramic or zirconia product too gently: both are designed to fracture under pressure, and treated softly they simply wear.

Wheels are a system, not a consumable

For bonded grinding, the wheel specification is grain, grit, grade, structure and bond together, and each is a lever. A wheel too hard for the job holds dull grain and burns; too soft and it wears away. Getting the specification right for the machine, the material and the coolant is what a good technical supplier does, and it changes cycle time more than any negotiation.

Dressing matters as much as the wheel. A conditioned wheel cuts cool and holds size; a neglected one burns parts and gets blamed for it. Ask what dressing regime a wheel needs and whether your machine can deliver it, because the wrong answer here produces a product that would have worked in a shop that dresses properly.

Safety is a specification, not a poster

Bonded abrasives operate close to their limits, and a wheel run above its maximum operating speed can fail catastrophically.
