Sourcing industrial trucks
The purchase decision people agonise over is the truck. The decision that actually determines what it costs is how you acquire it and who maintains it, because a forklift is bought once and serviced for a decade. A cheaper machine on an expensive service contract with poor response times is the more expensive machine, and that comparison is only possible if the enquiry asks for both together.
So describe the work rather than the truck. Load, lift height, hours a day, the floor it runs on and what it drives through, and a dealer can propose the right class. Ask for the truck price, the service contract and the residual or lease rate in one quote — and if the answer separates them, ask again.
The nameplate capacity is not your capacity
Capacity is quoted at a standard load centre, usually 500 mm, at a reference lift height. A load whose centre of gravity sits further forward, or a lift to the top of a high rack, derates the truck — sometimes by a third. A 2.5 tonne truck can easily be a 1.7 tonne truck for your actual pallet at your actual height.
Ask for the residual capacity chart for the specific mast and attachment combination, not the headline figure. And remember attachments themselves consume capacity: a rotator or a clamp adds weight ahead of the axle and takes its share before the load does.
Energy source is a shift-pattern question
- Lead-acid electric — the long-standing default for single-shift indoor work. Cheap to buy, needs a charging area with ventilation, and a battery change or a long charge between shifts.
- Lithium-ion — opportunity charging in breaks makes multi-shift work possible without a battery swap, no ventilation room, and far less maintenance. Higher purchase price and a business case that depends on your shift pattern rather than on the technology.
- Diesel — outdoor and heavy work, rough ground, all-weather. Not for indoor use in an occupied building.
- LPG — the outdoor-and-occasionally-indoor compromise, with cylinder logistics attached.
The honest test for lithium is whether you currently change batteries or run a second machine to cover charging. If you do, it usually pays. If you run one shift and park the truck overnight, lead-acid probably still wins on total cost.
Buy, lease or rent
Buying suits stable, predictable, high-utilisation work where you have maintenance capability and want the asset. Full-service leasing bundles the truck, maintenance, tyres and often a replacement machine into a monthly figure, which converts an unpredictable repair budget into a fixed cost — and is what most multi-truck fleets settle on. Short-term rental covers peaks and breakdowns and is expensive as a permanent arrangement.
Whichever you choose, the terms that matter are response time, what counts as fair wear and tear, and the hour limits. A lease priced on 1,200 hours a year gets expensive quickly on a truck running 2,000, and that overage clause is where lease comparisons are actually won and lost.
Fit the truck to the building, not the other way round
Aisle width and truck type are one decision, not two. A counterbalance truck needs a wide aisle; a reach truck works in a narrower one; articulated and very-narrow-aisle trucks go narrower still and need better floor flatness and often guidance. Changing the truck class can reclaim racking space, and changing the racking to suit a truck you already own is usually the expensive direction.
Say what the floor is like, whether there are ramps, what the door heights are and whether the truck goes outside. Solid tyres for smooth indoor concrete, cushion or pneumatic for rough or outdoor surfaces — the wrong choice is felt by the operator every day and shows up in the maintenance bill.
