Sourcing industrial painting
Industrial painting protects steel and other substrates with a liquid coating system, usually built in layers — a primer that bonds and inhibits corrosion, sometimes an intermediate build coat, and a topcoat that provides colour and weather resistance. It handles the parts powder coating cannot: pieces too large for an oven, heat-sensitive assemblies, and anything needing site touch-up.
It is also the finishing process where the specification is most standardised and most often quoted loosely. A system described by its corrosion class and total film thickness can be compared between suppliers; one described as "primer and topcoat" cannot.
Coating methods
Spray application
Airless spraying delivers high build quickly and dominates structural steel and large fabrications. Air-assisted and HVLP guns give a finer finish for visible surfaces, and electrostatic spraying improves transfer efficiency on complex shapes by attracting the charged paint to the earthed part. Most job shops offer a combination, chosen by part size and finish requirement.
Dip and e-coat
Cathodic dip coating immerses the part and deposits an extremely even primer electrically, reaching inside box sections and cavities that spray never touches. It is the standard first layer in automotive and high-volume steel work, almost always followed by a powder or wet topcoat, since the e-coat layer itself has limited UV resistance.
Coating systems

Preparation is the coating system — and the class needs two numbers
The single largest factor in how long an industrial coating lasts is not the paint but what happened to the surface before it. Coating over mill scale, rust or a contaminated surface produces a film that adheres well enough to pass inspection and then under-creeps from every edge and weld within a couple of years. Blast cleaning to a defined cleanliness grade with a specified surface profile is what makes the primer work, and it should appear in the enquiry as an explicit requirement rather than being left to the shop's habit. The second thing that causes disputes is quoting a corrosion class as a single value. Under ISO 12944 a specification needs both the corrosivity category of the environment — C2 through C5 — and the durability range, meaning how long the system should last before major maintenance. A system for C4 with low durability and one for C4 with very high durability are different products at different prices, and "C4" alone lets suppliers quote either. State both, along with the total dry film thickness you expect, and the quotes become directly comparable. Where parts have box sections, welds or tight internal corners, mention them: edges lose film thickness as paint pulls away during curing, and they are where corrosion starts.
