Sourcing photoelectric sensors

A photoelectric sensor detects an object by the light it interrupts, reflects or scatters. They are the workhorse of packaging lines, conveyors, door safety, bottling, printing and assembly — anywhere something has to be counted, positioned or confirmed present without touching it.

The catalogue for even one manufacturer runs to thousands of variants, and the choice is driven less by the object than by the environment: shiny or transparent targets, dust, spray, vibration, ambient light, wash-down. Describing the actual detection task usually gets you a better match than picking a part number and hoping.

Sensing modes

Through-beam

Emitter and receiver sit opposite each other and the object breaks the beam. The longest range and by far the most reliable mode — it works on dark, shiny, transparent and irregular objects alike. The cost is two housings, two cable runs and precise alignment.

Retroreflective

Emitter and receiver share one housing and a reflector sits opposite. One cable and easier alignment than through-beam, with good range. Use a polarising filter version when detecting shiny or film-wrapped objects, otherwise the target itself can act as a reflector and mask the detection.

Diffuse and special types

  • Diffuse (proximity mode) — sensing from one side off the object itself; shortest range, target colour and finish affect it.
  • Background suppression — diffuse with a defined cut-off distance, so a wall or conveyor behind is ignored.
  • Fork & frame sensors — fixed emitter/receiver geometry for label edges, small parts and high speed.
  • Fibre-optic sensors — tiny sensing head in tight or hot spots, amplifier mounted remotely.

What to specify when sourcing

Sensor quotes are only comparable when the electrical and mechanical details are pinned down:

  • Sensing mode & range — through-beam, retroreflective or diffuse, and the working distance.
  • Target — material, colour, finish, size and whether it is transparent or shiny.
  • Housing & mounting — M12/M18 barrel, rectangular block, fork; the mounting you already have.
  • Output — PNP or NPN, NO/NC, analogue, IO-Link, or relay.
  • Supply voltage — typically 10–30 V DC, or AC variants for legacy machines.
  • Environment — IP rating, wash-down, dust, temperature range, chemical exposure.
  • Response time — critical for fast lines and small-part detection.
  • Approvals — CE, UL, ATEX for hazardous areas, or functional safety rating if it is a guard.

Safety light curtains are a different purchase

If the sensor is guarding a hazard rather than counting product, you need a safety light curtain with a rated performance level (PL/SIL), not a standard photoelectric sensor. They look similar and are often searched for together, but the certification, wiring and validation requirements are entirely different.
