Sourcing extruded profiles
Extrusion is the friendliest of the plastics processes to source, because the entry cost is low. A profile die is a fraction of an injection mould — often a few thousand rather than tens of thousands — and it can be cut in weeks rather than months. That changes the whole shape of the decision: trying an extruder is cheap, and being wrong about one is recoverable.
What is not low is the minimum run. Extrusion is a continuous process, so a supplier prices in kilograms and machine hours, and a short run pays for the setup, the purge and the scrap at start-up regardless of how few metres you take. The quantity question is therefore the first one to settle honestly: a profile is cheap per metre and expensive per order.
What kind of extrusion you are asking for
- Solid and hollow profiles — the general case: seals, trims, edge protection, frames and channels in rigid or flexible material.
- Tube and hose — round sections where wall concentricity and burst pressure are the specification, not the outline.
- Co-extrusion — two or more materials in one profile, typically a rigid carrier with a soft sealing lip. One die, one process, no assembly — and a materially different supplier list.
- Sheet and film — flat stock for thermoforming or fabrication, sold by thickness and width rather than as a profile.
- Compounding — a mixed discipline where the extruder makes the material itself. Relevant when you need a filled or coloured grade nobody stocks.
Tolerances behave differently here
The single most common disappointment in extrusion is a designer expecting machined tolerances. An extruded profile leaves the die hot and soft, is drawn through a calibration unit and a water bath, and shrinks as it cools — so its final dimensions depend on line speed, cooling and the material batch, not just the die.
Realistically, expect tolerances in the range of a few tenths of a millimetre on small dimensions and proportionally more on large ones, per DIN 16941 or equivalent. Where a dimension really matters — a groove that must clamp, a bore that takes a shaft — say so explicitly, because the extruder can tighten it with better calibration tooling. Asking for tight tolerances everywhere just raises the price of everything.
Material, hardness and what it costs
Material choice drives price more than geometry does. Rigid PVC is cheap and weathers well; PE and PP are cheap and chemically resistant but harder to bond; TPE gives you rubber-like behaviour with thermoplastic processing; PA and PC sit at the technical end with the price to match. For sealing profiles, state the Shore hardness rather than saying 'soft' — it is the number that determines both feel and price.
Ask about colour and additive costs separately. UV stabilisation for outdoor use, flame retardancy and food or drinking-water approvals each add cost and documentation, and a colour change on a line means a purge that somebody pays for. On a small annual quantity, agreeing to run in the extruder's standard colour can save more than negotiating the per-metre rate.
Die cost, ownership and lead time
Expect to pay for the die and for the calibration tooling that goes with it, and expect a sampling run before production. Dies are refined after the first trial almost as a rule — the profile that comes out is never quite the profile that was drawn — so build a revision into the schedule rather than treating the first sample as a failure.
Settle ownership as you would for a mould: who owns the die once paid, where it is stored, and whether you can take it elsewhere. Extrusion dies are more transferable than injection moulds, but a die cut for one machine's tooling interface may still need adapting, so ask rather than assume.
