Sourcing technical plastic parts
Technical plastics is where plastics stops being a cheap alternative to metal and becomes an engineering choice with its own rules. These parts are specified for a property — low friction, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, service temperature, weight — and the wrong polymer does not fail slowly. It absorbs moisture and grows, or creeps under load, or cracks in a solvent nobody thought to mention.
The most useful enquiry therefore describes duty rather than material. What the part carries, how hot it gets, what it touches, what it runs against, how long it has to last. A good supplier will often propose a different polymer from the one on your drawing, and that conversation is worth having before the first order rather than after the first failure.
Machined or moulded
The same part can arrive by two routes, and the volume decides which.
- CNC machining from stock — cut from extruded or cast semi-finished rod, sheet and tube. No tooling, days rather than months, and the right answer for prototypes, spares and anything under a few thousand a year.
- Injection moulding — low piece cost once the tool exists, and the only sensible route at high volume. Comes with tooling cost, lead time and a design that has to suit moulding.
- Machining a moulded blank — moulded near-net then machined where tolerance matters. Common for gears and bearings that need precision on one feature only.
- Fabrication and welding — for tanks, ducts and large assemblies in PP or PE, built from sheet rather than cut from solid.
Choosing the polymer by what it must do
- POM (acetal) — the workhorse for precision machined parts: dimensionally stable, low friction, easy to machine. Poor with strong acids and not for high temperature.
- PA (nylon) — tough and wear resistant, but absorbs moisture and grows measurably with it. Fine for many parts, quietly ruinous for a tight tolerance nobody conditioned for.
- PEEK and PPS — high temperature, high strength, chemically inert, and expensive enough that the material dominates the quote. Specify only when the duty genuinely needs it.
- PTFE — lowest friction and near-universal chemical resistance, but creeps under load and needs filled grades for dimensional stability.
- PE and PP — cheap, chemically resistant, easy to fabricate. The default for tanks, liners and wear strips where precision is not the point.
Tolerances and the things that move
Plastics machine well but they do not behave like metal afterwards. They expand with temperature roughly ten times as much as steel, so a fit that is right at 20 °C may not be at 80 °C. Nylon absorbs several percent moisture and grows with it. And stock material carries internal stress from extrusion or casting, which relaxes when you machine one side away, bowing the part days later.
Suppliers who work in these materials manage this by stress-relieving stock before and between machining operations, and by roughing and finishing in separate passes. It costs time and it is the difference between parts that hold size and parts that are correct at inspection and wrong on arrival. Tell them the service temperature and humidity rather than only the tolerance, so they can advise where the tolerance is achievable at all.
What technical plastic parts cost
For machined parts the material is often the largest single line, especially in PEEK, PPS or filled PTFE, and the price follows the size of the billet rather than the finished part. Designing a part that nests inside a standard rod or plate size can save more than any process negotiation. Machining time follows geometry as it would in metal, though plastics cut fast and the constraint is usually holding the part without deforming it.
Ask about certificates as a separate item. Material traceability, FDA or EU 10/2011 food contact, drinking-water or medical documentation each cost real money and are usually only supplied if requested. Discovering the requirement after delivery means the batch has no paperwork and cannot be used.
