Sourcing sand casting
Sand casting is the most flexible casting process there is. A pattern forms a cavity in bonded sand, metal is poured in, and the mould is broken away afterwards. Because the mould is expendable and the pattern is comparatively cheap, sand casting handles what other processes cannot: very large parts, heavy sections, low volumes and almost any alloy.
That flexibility is exactly why it stays the default for machine bases, pump and valve bodies, gearbox housings, counterweights and structural iron parts. Tooling costs a fraction of a die, so a few dozen parts a year is perfectly viable — but surface finish is rougher and tolerances looser than die or investment casting, so critical features are almost always machined afterwards.
Sand casting processes
Green sand casting
Moist clay-bonded sand, reused continuously. The cheapest and fastest route, well suited to iron and aluminium in medium to high volumes. Surface finish and dimensional accuracy are modest, which is fine when the part will be machined where it matters.
Resin (chemically bonded) sand
Sand bound with a chemical binder that cures rigid. Better surface finish, tighter tolerances and stronger moulds, so it suits larger, heavier or more complex castings — and low volumes, since no expensive moulding line is required.
