It is worth asking two suppliers to quote both routes rather than assuming: a stamper who says a die is not justified at your volume is telling you something useful about their honesty as well as about your part.
What decides whether a supplier fits
- Press capacity and bed size — tonnage and press dimensions bound what tools they can run. A tool built for a larger press cannot simply move.
- In-house toolmaking — a stamper with their own toolroom fixes a worn die in days rather than weeks, which matters more than it sounds when the tool is running.
- Material handling — coil-fed versus sheet-fed changes cost and minimum quantities. Coil is cheaper at volume and requires a coil the supplier can buy.
