Sourcing electronic components

Component buying has two modes and they barely resemble each other. When a part is in stock everywhere, it is a price comparison and takes ten minutes. When it is on allocation, obsolete or single-sourced, it becomes a search for anyone holding real inventory, and the price stops being the interesting number. Most BOMs contain both kinds of line at once, which is why quoting a BOM as a single job usually goes badly.

Counterfeits are a supply-chain question, not a testing one

Counterfeit and remarked parts reach the market through the open channel, and they are not reliably caught by looking at them. Semiconductor lifecycles are shorter than the products built with them, so obsolescence is scheduled rather than accidental. When a manufacturer issues an end-of-life notice, there is a window for a last-time buy and then nothing. Allocation works differently: the part still exists, but demand outruns supply and lead times stretch from weeks to a year.
