Sourcing a control cabinet
The most common mistake in buying a panel is quoting it as a bill of materials. Two builders given the same component list will return numbers that look comparable and mean different things, because a control cabinet is not a box of parts — it is a verified assembly, and the verification is most of what separates a compliant panel from a collection of correctly wired components.
That is what IEC 61439 is about. It defines what has to be verified for the finished assembly: temperature rise, short-circuit withstand, clearances, protection against electric shock, and the documentation that proves it. A quote against that standard includes engineering work a bill-of-materials quote does not, which is exactly why the cheaper one so often is not.
What to specify
- Ratings — rated current, rated short-time withstand and the prospective short-circuit current at the installation point. That last number comes from the supply, not from the panel, and without it nobody can verify the design.
- Standard and market — IEC 61439 for Europe, UL 508A for the United States. They are not interchangeable, and a machine exported to the US with an IEC panel is a problem discovered at the customer's site.
- Enclosure and environment — IP or NEMA rating, material (painted steel, stainless for washdown, aluminium, GRP for corrosive), indoor or outdoor, and whether it is wall-mounted, free-standing or a bay in a line-up.
- Thermal load — drives and power supplies put real heat into a sealed box. Climate control has to be calculated from the dissipated power and the ambient, not chosen by habit.
- Who owns the design — are you supplying schematics, or is the builder engineering the panel? This decides who verifies, who signs the declaration, and who carries a mistake.
Temperature is what actually kills panels
A cabinet full of drives is a heater in a sealed enclosure, and the temperature inside is not an afterthought: component life halves roughly every ten degrees, and a panel that runs hot fails on a schedule years before it should. Verification of temperature rise is part of IEC 61439 for exactly this reason.
Ask for the thermal calculation, not just the fan or cooling unit part number. It needs total dissipated power, the enclosure surface, the ambient temperature at the installation site and the target internal temperature. Sizing a cooling unit by looking at the last panel is the standard shortcut and the standard cause of summer failures.
What you should get at handover
The physical panel is the smaller half of the delivery. The other half is the documentation: as-built schematics in native and PDF form, the parts list, the terminal and cable schedules, the verification records for the assembly, the declaration of conformity and the operating instructions. A panel without them cannot be safely modified later, and modification is certain over its life.
Agree the language of the documentation too, and the format the schematics come in. Receiving a scanned PDF of a drawing produced in a CAD system you do not have is technically compliance and practically useless the first time a circuit has to change.
Retrofit, extension and obsolescence
Extending an existing cabinet is common and rarely as simple as adding a device. Adding load changes the thermal balance and may change the short-circuit picture, and a substantial modification can make the modifier responsible for the assembly's conformity — which may be you rather than the original builder.
Obsolescence is the other driver. When a contactor or drive family goes end-of-life, replacements are not always form-fit compatible, and a panel built around a discontinued series eventually becomes a rebuild rather than a repair. Describing the existing panel and its age in the enquiry gets you suppliers who will survey it before quoting, which is the answer you want.
