Sourcing fasteners

Fasteners are the cheapest components in most assemblies and among the most consequential. A bolt costs cents; a bolt of the wrong class, the wrong coating or uncertain origin costs a recall. That asymmetry is the whole reason fastener sourcing deserves more attention than its share of spend suggests.

The corrosion trap nobody costs in

Putting a stainless bolt into an aluminium structure, or a plain steel bolt into stainless, creates a galvanic couple, and in a wet environment the less noble metal corrodes at the joint. This shows up months later as a seized or wasted fastener that has quietly damaged the part around it.
