Sourcing industrial adhesives

Adhesive selection is a design decision that arrives disguised as a purchasing one. The right question is rarely "which glue is strongest" but "which chemistry suits these two materials, this joint, this production rhythm and this service life" — and the answers differ enormously even within a single product family.

That makes the enquiry unusually important. Name both substrates precisely, including any coating, plating or mould release; describe how the joint is loaded and how big the bond area is; state how long your process can wait before the part moves; and describe the temperature, moisture, chemicals and UV it will see. A supplier given that can specify with confidence. A supplier given "a strong glue for plastic" cannot.

Surface preparation decides the result

Most bond failures are not adhesive failures. They are surface failures — oil, mould release, oxide layers, dust, or a plastic with surface energy too low to wet at all. An excellent adhesive on a poorly prepared surface will underperform a modest adhesive on a properly prepared one, every time.

So treat preparation as part of the specification, not an afterthought. Cleaning, abrasion, primers, and for polyolefins plasma or flame treatment all have a cost and a cycle time, and they belong in the process discussion at the start. An adhesive that reaches full strength in 24 hours may be perfectly acceptable if the part can be handled after 90 seconds — and completely unusable if the strongest option needs ten minutes in a clamp you do not have.

State your cycle time in the enquiry and ask for the fixture time at your workshop temperature, since these figures are usually quoted at 23 °C and a cold morning changes them substantially. Ask too about the shelf life and storage conditions: two-part systems and refrigerated products carry a stock-management cost that is easy to miss at quotation.

Test the joint, not the data sheet

Lap shear figures on a data sheet are measured on a standard coupon with a prepared surface. Your joint has a different geometry, a different bond line thickness and different loading, so treat the data sheet as a shortlist tool and the sample as the decision. Ask for samples and bond your actual parts.

Then age them. A bond that is strong on day one and weak after a thousand hours of humidity and thermal cycling is a field failure waiting to happen, and ageing is the test people skip because it takes time. A supplier who offers accelerated ageing data for your substrate combination is worth more than one offering a higher headline number.

Dispensing, safety and the rest of the cost

The adhesive is one line of the cost. Cartridge guns, static mixers, metering and mixing units, robot dispensing valves and their maintenance are the rest, and mixer nozzles in particular become a consumable with a real annual figure. Ask for the dispensing method to be quoted alongside the adhesive so you are comparing systems rather than prices per kilo.

Safety and compliance also belong in the conversation early.
