Sourcing hoses and couplings

A hose is rarely bought as a hose. It is bought as an assembly — a length of hose with a specific fitting crimped on each end — and the assembly is only as good as the weakest of those three parts. Get the hose right and the fitting standard wrong and you have an expensive length of rubber that connects to nothing.

That is why the ends matter as much as the bore. Thread standards look interchangeable and are not: BSP and NPT have different thread forms and sealing methods, and forcing one into the other damages both.

Hose types

Hydraulic hose

Rated by construction and working pressure under EN 853 and EN 856 or the SAE 100R series — 1SN and 2SN for general duty, 4SP and 4SH spiral types for high pressure and impulse. Specified by nominal bore, pressure, bend radius and the fitting on each end. Because these assemblies fail under pressure, they are usually replaced on an interval rather than on failure.

Industrial hose

A much wider family, defined by what it carries: water and air, chemicals, food and beverage, abrasives, fuel, or steam. Suction duties need a helix so the hose does not collapse under vacuum; delivery-only hoses do not. Food and pharmaceutical lines need certified liners, and many chemical and dry-bulk applications need electrical continuity so static cannot build up.

Couplings and fittings

What to specify when sourcing

Working pressure, burst pressure and the safety factor

Hose datasheets carry two pressure figures and only one of them is a rating. Working pressure is the maximum the hose may see in service; burst pressure is where it fails on test, typically four times higher for hydraulic hose. The safety factor between them is not headroom you are entitled to spend — it covers impulse, ageing, temperature and the wear the hose picks up in service. Selecting on burst pressure because the number is bigger is a genuinely dangerous mistake, and it is common. Temperature erodes the same margin: most rubber hoses lose a substantial part of their pressure rating as they get hot, so a hose rated at 20 °C is not rated the same at 100 °C. Two more things worth stating in the enquiry, because they are the usual causes of an assembly that arrives and cannot be fitted: the tightest bend radius in the actual routing, and whether the length you quoted is end-to-end over the fittings or the hose alone. Suppliers assume different conventions, and a short assembly is scrap.

What is the difference between working pressure and burst pressure?
Working pressure is the maximum pressure the hose may see in normal service; burst pressure is the pressure at which it fails in testing, typically four times the working pressure for hydraulic hose. Are BSP and NPT threads interchangeable?
No. They have different thread forms and angles and seal differently, so joining one to the other will leak and can damage both parts. Always state the thread standard, size and gender for each end of the assembly, and say if the two ends differ.
What is the difference between suction and delivery hose?
A suction hose contains a reinforcing helix so it resists collapsing under vacuum, which is essential when the pump draws through it. A delivery hose only has to contain pressure and has no such reinforcement. Using a delivery hose on a suction line will flatten it and starve the pump.
