Sourcing industrial valves
Valves are where a piping specification becomes a purchase order, and where a small mismatch gets expensive. Size and pressure class get you a valve that bolts in; the media, the temperature and the duty decide whether it seals in two years' time.
The single most useful distinction to make in your enquiry is what the valve is for. Isolation — fully open or fully closed — and control — held part-open to regulate flow — are different jobs, and a valve built for one is destroyed by the other.
Valve types
Quarter-turn: ball and butterfly
A ball valve gives full bore, near-zero pressure drop and a tight shut-off from a 90-degree turn, which is why it dominates isolation duty. Butterfly valves do the same job in a fraction of the face-to-face length and weight, especially from DN100 upward, at the cost of a disc that stays in the flow. Both are fast to actuate and easy to automate.
Multi-turn: gate and globe
Gate valves lift a wedge clear of the bore for unrestricted flow, and are meant to be fully open or fully shut — throttling one erodes the seat. Globe valves route flow through a seat and plug, which costs pressure drop but gives genuine throttling capability and tight regulation. If you need to modulate, this is the family to look at.
Check, control and safety
- Check valves — swing, wafer or spring type; prevent reverse flow without operator action.
- Control valves — globe or rotary with a positioner, sized on Kv/Cv rather than line size.
- Safety & relief valves — protect against overpressure; usually type-approved and certified.

Isolation vs. control — the mistake that eats seats
A ball or gate valve held half-open to regulate flow will not last. The flow accelerates through the narrow gap and the resulting turbulence and cavitation cut the seat and the ball or wedge, so a valve that sealed perfectly on day one starts passing within months. It is one of the most common and most avoidable failures in a plant, and it comes from buying an isolation valve for a control job because the line size was the only number to hand. Control valves are sized on Kv or Cv — the flow they pass at a given pressure drop — which usually makes them smaller than the pipe, not the same size. The second half of the same problem is seat material: PTFE is chemically near-universal but limited on temperature, EPDM is excellent in water and steam yet destroyed by mineral oil, and FKM is the reverse. Name the media and its temperature and let the supplier pick the elastomer.
